Hawaii's Green Sand Beach

If you don't have a 4x4 vehicle, you can walk to this beach from South Point. It is 3 miles each way, no shade, no facilities. Bring lots of water and your walking shoes. If you don't want to hike and still don't have a 4x4 vehicle, there are some very nice taxi drivers who will drop you at the beach for a fee.

We think it's great that so many people are discovering this unique and wonderful beach, but want to remind folks about a few things. Please don't remove the green sand from the beach. We know it is pretty and special, but if everyone takes some, there eventually won't be any left at all. Also, this area of the island is the site where the first Polynesians landed in Hawaii and is a very special place for the Hawaiian people.

Want to do something great for Hawaii that shows you really care about our lovely islands? Bring a bag with you when heading out for Green Sands and help pick up some of this trash.

Most of this trash washes in from the ocean, but since we all want to enjoy this beautiful coastline, why not help keep it beautiful?

New Route: Ride to the Southernmost Point in the U.S.A.

We're not taking about Florida people! The southernmost point in the U.S.A. is right here on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Raw beauty, great food, and twisty roads await on this South Point Route.

South Point Route

-From Big Island Motorcycle Co. head south on Queen Kaahumanu Hwy (Hwy 19).
-Ride about 83 miles south (staying on the same road) to the town of Naalehu. You will pass through the towns of Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua, Captain Cook, Ocean View and Waiohinu before reaching Naalehu.
-Once in Naalehu, look for a cafe on your right, across from the grocery store, called Hana Hou. This place is amazing! Great place to fuel up for breakfast or lunch and be sure to save room for dessert, they always have an incredible selection of sweet treats.
-There is also a gas station in Naalehu, you will want to fuel up here before heading back.
-To get to the actual southernmost point you will head back the way you came, heading north this time on the hwy. Travel about 11 miles until you reach South Point Road.
-A couple words of warning: South Point Road is one lane, has a 3-inch ledge drop-off on either side, has some potholes and other hazards, and can get quite windy. That said, as long as you take it easy, you'll be fine, but always, always ride within your limits and if these road conditions make you uncomfortable, don't do it!
-South Point Road ends with awesome views of the Pacific on top of raw, cliff-lined coastline. Very worth checking out. You'll even see lots of people jumping off those cliffs.
-Have a gander at one of the most remote areas in the world, then hop back on the hwy heading north for another 80 miles or so to make your way back to Big Island Motorcycle Co.
-Also, we don't recommend riding this route at night time (due to road and lighting conditions), so allow yourself plenty of daylight hours to make it back.

Update: motorcycle rental rates

On July 1, 2011 the State of Hawaii has increased their rental "Road Tax" by 250% to $7.50 per unit (car or motorcycle) per day which effects all rental companies. We used to absorb this fee in our price but can no longer afford to do so.

Starting August 1, 2011 we will be joining everybody else by charging the $7.50 per day "Road Tax" for motorcycle only rentals in addition to our advertised price plus sales tax.

Sorry for the inconvenience, we aren't exactly happy about this either.

The tax increase is for road improvements and maintenance.

Stunning Beauty at Pololu Valley

We took a trip to Pololu Valley a few days ago, one our favorite rides and places to visit here on the Big Island. Although it was a little rainy, we managed to make the most of it by building a fire, cozying up, and listening to the waves crash along the black sand beach.

An unexpected treat were the waterfalls that could be seen from the scenic viewpoint at the top of the valley, a sight we've never experienced before, so it must be real rainy over there! Make your way over soon to catch this rare sight.

To get to the beach on the valley floor, you'll need to park and hike about 1/4 mile (straight) down. It's a little tough on the way back up, just bring water, and you'll be fine. For more info and detailed directions read these routes: Kohala Mountain Road or Double Valley Ride.

There are a some great events going on June 11 on the Big Island in celebration of King Kamehameha Day. Grab some bikes, some good friends, and enjoy one or all of these events.

North Kohala Kamehameha Day Celebration
8:00am Lei Draping at the statue of King Kamehameha in Kapa'au
9:00am Parade from Downtown Hawi to the Statue in Kapa'au
10:00am-4:00pm, Ho'olaule'a (crafts fair) at Kamehameha Park top field. Ono food and live entertainment.

Kamehameha Festival in Hilo
This festival features features a ho'olaule'a with top Hawaii recording artists, hula halau, and various cultural presentations. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Moku Ola (Coconut Island) in Hilo. Free.

King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade in Kailua-Kona
To take place on Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona, the annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade will feature more than 90 horses, as well as floats, marching bands, hula halau and regal pa'u riders on horseback. The parade begins at 9 a.m. near Royal Kona Resort at Walua Road, passing through town to the Kailua Pier and up Palani Road to Kuakini Hwy., ending near the West Hawaii Today building. A ho'olaulea will be held after the parade at Swing Zone near the Old Airport beginning at 10:30 a.m. Cultural workshops, exhibits, hula and live performances will be featured.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Hawaii

We are happy to share that Hawaii is taking on a motorcycle awareness campaign. TV commercials and other advertising make drivers more aware of bikers on the road. HOWEVER, none of the outer islands have a rider safety course which we feel is vital to rider safety. We wish they would spend their pennies on rider education. That said, here are some helpful hints for drivers and riders:

Drivers need to:

Remember that motorcycles have the same rights and privileges as any other motor vehicle on the roadway. Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width; never try to share a lane.
Always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.
Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. This allows the motorcyclist to anticipate traffic flow and find a safe lane position.
Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle – motorcycle signals are often not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed.
Allow more following distance, three or four seconds, when behind a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. And don’t tailgate. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars.
Never drive while distracted.

Motorcyclists need to do their part, as well:

Get properly trained and licensed. Every new rider should enroll in a Basic RiderCourse. Unfortunately not available to those of us on the outer islands!!!!
Avoid riding in poor weather conditions.
Wear brightly colored protective gear, such as long pants and a riding jacket.
Also wear eye protection, boots and a DOT-compliant helmet.
Use turn signals for every turn or lane change, even if the rider thinks no one will see it.
Combine hand signals and turn signals to draw more attention to themselves.
Use reflective tape and stickers to increase conspicuity.
Position themselves in the lane where they will be most visible to other drivers.
Ride within your own skill limits and obey traffic laws.
Be a lifelong learner by taking refresher RiderCourses.
Never drive while impaired.

Kohala Camping: Deserted Paradise

It doesn't get much better than this: riding into a deserted campground right on the shoreline. At first we thought, what's wrong with this place? Why is no one else camping here? And then we decided it was biker's luck. Situated along rocky shoreline with plenty of shade, good swimming and snorkeling, bathrooms, showers, and plenty of feral cats (eww), this was one of the best campsites we've enjoyed.

We are purposely not sharing the name or location though, we'd like to keep it as it is, deserted. If you call or email and ask us real, real nice, we might share.

Motorcycle Route: Zipline + North Kohala

Up for some adventure? In this route we combine a great zipline tour with our friends down at Big Island Eco Adventures with awesome, twisty roads, good food, and dazzling views.

- First things first, if you wanna zip you gotta book in advance. This tour company is very popular and is booked at least a week in advance.
- Allow yourself at least an hour to get to the zipline check in center from Big Island Motorcycle Co.
- From Big Island Motorcycle Co. in Waikoloa, head north on Hwy 19 by making a left at the light.
- After 10 miles you will come to a T intersection. Make a left toward Hawi.
- After about 2 miles make a right onto Akoni Pule Hwy toward Hawi.
- Continue along this hwy until you reach the town of Hawi (the first town you come to) and make a right on to Hawi Road just before the old-fashioned gas station.
- On your immediate right is the zipline check-in. There are big signs pointing the way.
- Enjoy your zipline tour! Below are some highlights from the tour we tagged along on:

Zipline Check-in

- All that adventure will surely make you hungry. Fortunately, there are several good options within walking distance of the zipline check-in. Bamboo has been voted best restaurant on the island for many years, and is right across the street. Super fresh sushi (they make their own wasabi!) can be had at Sushi Rock, also across the street. There is also mexican, plate lunch style, and deli options available all in this one little town. Yum!
- Now that your belly is full, let's get in some adventurous riding. From the zipline check-in, head up Hawi Road (NOT the way you came) toward Waimea and continue to follow the signs toward Waimea.
- This is our favorite riding road on the island. Lots of great twisties and amazing mountain-to-ocean views.
- This road eventually dumps you into the town of Waimea. Make a right at the stop sign toward Kawaihae.
- After about 10 miles make a left onto Hwy 19 toward Kona/Waikoloa.
- After another 10 miles you reach the traffic light for the Waikoloa Beach Resort, make a right and you are back at Big Island Motorcycle Co.

Motorcycle Route: Big Views South Kona Cruise

Since we've hired our wonderful part-time employee, Dustin and I get to go riding together again! Here is the great route we enjoyed this week.

- From Big Island Motorcycle Co. head north on Hwy 19 to the next light (1 mile). Make a right toward Waikoloa Village.
- Pass the village and continue until the road comes to a T intersection. Make a right onto the Old Mamalohoa Hwy, aka Hawaii Belt Road.
- Take this road into Kona, about 20 miles, looking for the turnoff on your left onto Hwy 180 toward Holualoa. This turnoff is not well marked, but is right after you pass the traffic light for Hina Lani St., look for the left hand turn lane.

- Enjoy the Kona upper road twisties as you ride through Holualoa and Kona's famous coffee country. If you are interested in visiting coffee farms, try our Kona Coffee Route (scroll to the end of the page) and coffee farm recommendations.
- A nice place to stop if you need a break at this point is the town of Holualoa. There is a great little coffee shop, a mini mart, and plenty of art galleries and historic buildings to check out as you give your legs a stretch.
- Continue heading south. The road ends at an odd intersection, a stop sign. Make a left onto Hwy 11 heading south toward Captain Cook.
- After 4 miles of so, make a right onto Napo'opo'o Rd. This is not a well marked turnoff, so keep your eyes peeled.
- This road descends down to the ocean from 2000', opening up to gorgeous views of Kealakekua Bay, where the Captain Cook Monument is located.
- Be sure to take a right at both stop signs you encounter on this road.
- Where road meets ocean you will be able to see the Captain Cook Monument across the bay as well as a close-up view of an ancient Hawaiian heiau, or temple.

- After you've had your fill of turtles and crashing waves, head back up Napo'opo'o by making a left at the first (immediate) stop sign.
- At the next stop sign, make a right onto Middle Keei Rd., enjoying glimpses of the quaintest Hawaiian homes and farms.
- After a few miles, make a right at the next stop sign, onto Painted Church Rd. and keep your eyes out for the left hand turn into the Painted Church parking lot. This church, it's insides completely covered in murals, is worth a stop not only for the paintings, but for the beautiful views and a stroll around the well-kept gardens.

- From the parking lot, make a left back onto Painted Church Rd.
- At the stop sign, make a left onto City of Refuge Rd. which takes you to a T intersection.
- Make a left at the T onto Hwy 11 heading north toward Kona.
- Now here's the tricky part. Your lunch spot is a place called The Coffee Shack which has very little parking (good thing you are on a motorcycle) and requires a left turn against traffic. Please, please, please be careful making this left (if there is parking) and if you miss it and pass it, not to worry, there is a right turn just up the road where you can turn around and figure out where to park.

- Now the not so tricky part, the Coffee Shack has amazing views and great food, so grab a table and take a load-off. We recommend the pizzas (best crust EVER) and any of the desserts in their glass case of temptation.

- Depending on how much riding you have left in you after lunch, there are two ways to get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co. You can simply retrace your path, or if you are tired and don't feel like re-navigating the twisties, simply follow Hwy 11 all the way (40 miles) to Waikoloa Beach Drive and hang a left, a straight shot.

NEW Motorcycle Route: Waterfall Wonders

Catch a glimpse of Hawaii's stunning waterfalls along this scenic route.
Minimum 6 hours.

Umauma Falls

- From Big Island Motorcycle Co., take a left at the traffic signal, heading north on Hwy 11.
- After about 10 miles you will come to a T. Take a right, heading toward Waimea.
- Waimea is a good stopping point for snacks/coffee/gas (10 miles from the T intersection). Honoka'a (20 miles from T intersection) is also good and they have Tex Drive-In, famous for malasadas, aka Portuguese donuts.
- Continue along Hwy 19 toward Hilo. The highway takes you in and out of several gorgeous gulches, some of which have waterfalls streaming down the middle. CAUTION: if you feel the need to pull over and take pictures, please remember that this is a highway with a speed limit of 55mph. Slowing down or coming to a stop in this road is extremely dangerous. Please find an appropriate pull-out before stopping along the road.
- After passing the Laupahoehoe lookout you will see signs for a "Scenic Route" to your right. Take it! This road takes you along the old highway and through sugarcane fields of the past.
- Look for the signs for World Botanical Gardens and Gardens Visitor Center toward the end of the scenic route. Inside the gardens is Umauma Falls (pictured above), Kamaee Falls, and of course a wonderful array of tropical plants. Entrance fee is $13 per adult and is well worth it.
- Get back on Hwy 19 heading toward Hilo. Watch for the signs to Honomu and Akaka Falls after a few miles, it will be a right turn. There are a couple turns after exiting the highway, but there is signage to help you.
- At Akaka Falls State park there are two waterfalls, Akaka and Kahuna Falls. There is a moderately easy 1/2 walking trail to the falls viewing areas. At the time of writing entrance was free, however this is slated to change soon.


Akaka Falls

- Hop back on Hwy 19 toward Hilo. After a couple miles you will see signs for another scenic route to your left, take it! This road takes you through dense jungle, and passes some baby waterfalls along the way. Please use CAUTION on this road as it is often wet, slippery, and has some very tight turns. Best to take this road slow and easy.
- The scenic route will take you back to the Hwy 19, continue toward Hilo. The hwy brings you right into downtown Hilo, which is worth a stop to walk around. We especially love Lilioukalani Park and Banyan Drive. You will want to get gas here, there is no gas where you are heading next.
- Find Waianuenue Avenue (your first right from the hwy), also the main road that cuts through downtown Hilo heading west. Look for the signs to Rainbow Falls, turn will be to your right. Admission free.

Rainbow Falls

- Get back on Waianuenue (heading west) which turns into State Hwy 200, aka Saddle Road. CAUTION: there is a 3 mile strip of road along Saddle that is unpaved (hard-pack gravel). It is fine to take the motorcycles on this road, but use caution. If, after visiting Rainbow Falls you get hit with a lot of rain or foggy conditions, it will only get worse along the Saddle, so you may want to consider re-tracing your steps to get back. This is true if it is getting dark, there are no street lights on Saddle and it gets DARK. Also, Saddle Road gets very high in elevation so it's gets darn chilly, bring a jacket (provided with rentals).
- If you took Saddle Road, take a left at the T intersection after about 30 miles, then an almost immediate right toward Waikoloa. Descend down this road 10 miles until you hit another T at Hwy 11. Take a left at the light then a right at the next light to reach Big Island Motorcycle Co.

Insider Tip of the Week: Find a great Lu'au

Attending a lu'au is a must for visitors to Hawaii. Lu'au means "Hawaiian feast or party" and generally includes lots of food, music, and dancing. Insider Tip of the Week: Finding Turtles

While in Hawaii you will not want to miss catching a glimpse of a Hawaiian Green Turtle, or Honu, as they are known on the islands.

There are a few beaches where it is highly likely to see them either sunning on the sand or swimming very near the shoreline.

1. Anaeho'omalu Beach Park, aka A Bay. This beach is located just across the street from Big Island Motorcycle Co., right in front of the Marriott hotel.

2. Honokohau State Park, aka Turtle Beach. Inside the Honokohau Harbor, about 3 miles south of the Kona airport. Once you make the turn into the harbor, stay to the right. Pass the boat launch and park near the sailing club. Follow the trail to the beach.

3. Ka'upulehu Beach, aka Four Seasons Resort. Turn into the Hualalai Four Seasons Resort about 8 miles north of the airport. Ask the guard for a beach pass (free). Follow the signs to the beach on the southern end of the resort, which is really in front of Kukio Resort.

Remember!!! Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are an endangered species. You must stay at least 20 feet away from the turtles while viewing them, no exceptions. It is the law, please respect the turtles.

NEW Route: Black Sand Beach

Tucked into the farthest reaches of the Mauna Lani Resort (only 2 miles from our shop) is a great black sand beach perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling, and relaxing Hawaiian style. Want to get there? Follow this great route:

Via Motorcycle or Moped:
     - From Big Island Motorcycle Co. follow Waikoloa Beach Drive to the traffic signal and take a left heading north.
     - After 2 miles take a left into the Mauna Lani Resort.
     - At the round-about take the road farthest to the left going south. Follow this road about a mile, looking out for the (small) residential looking sign that says "49 Black Sand Beach" on your left. This is a gated community but also a public beach access point.
     - Tell the guard you wish to go to the beach. He will have you sign in and you are free to access the beach.
     - Follow the main road inside all the way to the end where you will find the beach parking lot.
     - There are bathrooms and fresh water showers. Don't forget your snorkel gear!

Via Bicycle:
     - There are two ways to get to the Black Sand Beach via bicycle. The first is to follow the route above. If you are not comfortable riding a bicycle along the highway, you may access the beach via the Kings' Trail.
     - To get to the Kings' Trail from Big Island Motorcycle Co. take Waikoloa Beach Dr. until you reach the Waikoloa Colony Villas condo complex. Just to the east of the complex is the Kings' Trail which takes you across and into the Mauna Lani Resort area.
   - Please note, the Kings' Trail is extremely rough and you must walk the bikes along the trail due to loose lava rock conditions. It is highly recommended you wear sturdy shoes. Be aware that there are places along the trail where you will need to lift the biked over rocks.
     - That said, it takes about 15 minutes to walk the bikes over this section of the trail and back onto pavement.
     - You may cross back over onto pavement just before the little bridge on your left.
     - After crossing the little bridge, take a right onto the road.
     - At the T intersection, take a left.
     - Follow this road, looking out for the (small) residential looking sign that says "49 Black Sand Beach" on your left. This is a gated community but also a public beach access point.
     - Tell the guard you wish to go to the beach. He will have you sign in and you are free to access the beach.

Insider Tip of the Week: Where can I get some breakfast around here?

Need to fuel up before a long day at the beach or a long drive around the island? It can be tricky to find good, reasonably priced breakfast in the Waikoloa Beach Resort, so save some time and use these tips to find yourself some ono grub.

First of all, get out of your resort! Yes, they have charming views and a wonderful setting, but you will definitely pay for it.

For something quick, go to either Whaler's General Store, located inside the Kings' Shops or Island Gourmet Market, located in the Queen's Marketplace. Both have a deli with lots of take-out options, including coffee to go. Do it island style and grab a musubi, spam rolled in rice and seaweed, yum!

For sit down breakfast go to the Kings' Grille located at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course country club. Very reasonable prices, and they are open early for the golfers.

Romano's Macaroni Grill, located in the Queen's Marketplace, is now open for breakfast, but we haven't tried it yet.

The humpback whales have officially returned to Hawaiian waters! During winter the humpbacks migrate down from Alaska to birth their babies in warmer seas. Insider Tip of the Week: know your lava flows

What's a trip to the Big Island without a visit to the volcano? Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is enormous and deserves a full day of exploration. You may be surprised to hear that the actual lava flow viewing area is located outside the national park near a town called Kalapana. Not only that, but the flow moves around frequently and sometimes doesn't flow at all. So get in the know and call ahead of time to get information on where and when you can see the flow:

Another option is to take a guided tour that will take you directly to all the great sites, drive you around, and even feed you. A major plus in going with a tour is that you do not have to navigate Hawaii's very dark (no street lights) roads at night, as night time is the best for viewing the lava.

Insider Tip of the Week: check the weather!

Weather on the islands can be extremely variable so you will want to check the reports a day ahead of time in order to plan your routes around the island. We think the NOAA site is the best for getting up to date weather info. Simply click on their map of the island to see the weather in different locations.

Keep in mind that the Big Island has many micro climates meaning that you could be in desert-like conditions one minute and tropical rainforest the next. This means that, in most cases, you will be able to "ride through" the rain because if it's raining in Captain Cook that certainly does not mean it's raining in Kailua-Kona.

Another tip is that you are usually in the clear as long as the percentage of rain stays below 40% or if it says scattered showers. This means you may hit some rain, but it won't likely be extended showers that would ruin your ride.

We will check the weather for you when you come in to pick up your rental as a complementary service, we'd never want to send you directly to the rain! But of course, nature is nature, so you never really know what she's gonna do.

Insider Tip of the Week: Boogie Down

Top Three Boogie Boarding Spots on the Kona Side of the Big Island:

1. Hapuna Beach State Park

The largest white sand beach on the island has a nice boogie boarding break. Except for days when there is a winter swell it is a great spot for beginners and kids, too.

Another gorgeous white sand beach with waves. Experienced boogie boarders can go for the break in the center of the beach, beginners may want to surf on the north end of the beach.

The access road to this beach is located directly across from the West Hawaii Veteran's Cemetary, just south of the Four Seasons Resort.

Insider Tip of the Week: Free Petroglyph Tour

Free, guided tours of Hawaiian petroglyphs (carvings in the lava rock) are available Thursday - Sunday at the Kings' Shops in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Meet at 10:30am at center stage inside the shopping center. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat, and sunscreen and be sure to bring some water. Tours last about an hour.

Here is one visitor's account:

“Being an exchange student from Pakistan, it was an exciting experience for me to look at all those interesting patterns in the stones, and try solving the mysteries behind them. Our tour guide was very informative, he told us interesting facts about the strange stone carvings, and how the Hawaiian traditions had changed from time to time. One of the most interesting ones was that the circles represented the birth of a male child on the day of a solar eclipse. The caves were even more interesting. I wonder how people could seek shelter in a place that tight to fit in? The guide pointed out some sea shells at the site of petroglyphs which were thousands of years old! He also talked about Mauna Kea being the tallest mountain of the world because its base starts from the sea bed! It was very fascinating to know about it because Mount Everest is what people around the world know as being the tallest mountain.

The hike was super fun and informative. We tried not to step on the ancient carvings to keep the remains of history intact.

The patterns of human-like figures were most interesting to look at, although nobody has yet discovered that what all the carvings exactly mean, its still fun to look at all the shapes and try to discover the meaning behind every symbol. Especially if you are interested in history and archeology, it is the perfect place to explore!”

Hawaiian History Route

This route can be completed on a motorcycle, moped, or bicycle. Time varies depending on which vehicle you choose.

Starting at Big Island Motorcycle Co. at the Kings' Shops, head north on Hwy 11 about 2 miles until you reach the Mauna Lani Resort where you will make a left hand turn to enter the resort. At the roundabout take the first right towards the Fairmont Orchid. Look for the sign that says "Holoholo Beach Park & Puako Petroglyph Park" and make a right.

Park in the beach parking lot and look for the signs directing you toward the petroglyph trail.

The trail takes about 15 minutes to get to the petroglyph viewing area. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes as the kiawe thorns along the trail are nasty and will go right through your slippers (flip flops).

Petroglyphs are Hawaiian rock carvings. They are typically found on flat lava rock surfaces and the significance of many of the carvings is still unknown but you will see carvings of figures like warriors and pregnant women. There is some information along the trail which provides further explanations. The Big Island has the largest concentration of petroglyphs in all of the Hawaiian islands and this particular site is the best I've visited so far. More info: Petroglyphs

Once you are back in the parking lot you can head back the way you came to get back to the highway, or if you are on a bicycle you can head toward the beach and take a right on the shoreline trail. This will eventually lead you to the town of Puako. Ride straight through Puako and up the hill and you will be back on the highway.

Travelling north on Hwy 11 (take a left) you will reach a T intersection after about 5 miles. Take a left toward Kawaihae. After about a quarter mile you will see Spencer Beach Park, make a left into the park. Inside the park is the Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site. This heiau (temple) is one of the largest ever constructed and was built around 1790 by King Kamehameha. There is loads of historical information as well as knowledgeable guides at the site. Visit any day of the week from 7:45am-5pm (entrance gates close at 4:30pm).

Once you've had your fill of interesting Hawaiian history continue heading north on Akoni Pule Hwy (a left out of Spencer Beach Park) to the town of Kawaihae, less than one mile, where you can get a cold drink or good grub at one of the several eateries there.

To get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co. simply head south on Akoni Puly Hwy, make a right onto Hwy 11 towards Kona, travel about 10 miles, and take a right onto Waikoloa Beach Dr.

Insider Tip of the Week: Free coffee farm tour

Did you know that coffee grown in Kona is considered to be the world's best coffee? If you are coming to the Big Island and love you a cuppa, visiting a coffee farm should be on your itinerary.

Most of the coffee farm visits in Kona are free, but Mauka Meadows is a big hit for even the non-coffee lovers among us. Just north of the town of Holualoa on Hwy 180 Mauka Meadows is a botanical garden loaded with fruit trees, tropical flowers, and of course, coffee trees. You park at the top and walk down to their visitor area where you are met by an infinity pool fountain and the chance to taste and purchase their coffees. These views are matched by none. The staff will drive you back to the parking lot when you are ready (it's a pretty steep hill).

Bicycle Route: Secret Beach

This is an easy route that can take an hour or all day, depending on how long you want to linger.

Starting from Big Island Motorcycle Co. in the Kings' Shops head west on Waikoloa Beach Drive toward the Hilton hotel.

Just before reaching the Hilton and after passing the Kolea subdivision, take a left on an unmarked road at the stop sign. This road will dead end so look for a sign that says "Shoreline Access Trail" near the freshwater pond area. It looks like the pictures below.

Be sure to yield to pedestrians when riding on this trail.

When you reach the shoreline, take a right on the shoreline trail. If you have a mountain bike you can continue riding, if you have a beach cruiser, you may need to walk your bike at this point.

Continue on another five minutes and you'll find this "Secret Beach" with a decent swimming hole and white sand.

If you continue on you will eventually reach the Hilton hotel and can exit that way, or simply come back the way you came. This would be an excellent sunset viewing spot!

Insider Tip of the Week

This week's insider tip takes you to downtown Kailua Kona where you can cheer on the Ironman World Championship participants today, Saturday, October 9.

Right on the corner of Palani Rd. and Alii Drive is the finish line for the Ironman Triathlon. The finish line is fully set up with a stage, giant TV screen, an announcer and lots of screaming fans. The triathletes begin crossing the finish line in the early afternoon but the real insider tip is to head on down to the finish line in the evening and stay (if you can) until midnight when the very last athletes cross. These participants are the ones who need to be cheered on the most, plus by going in the evening you can avoid some of the road closures, parking hassles (well ok it will still be a hassle, but less so), and the heat.

Ironman Road Closures and Safety Tips

Please be aware that there will be major road closures on the West side of the Big Island all day on Saturday, October 9, 2010 due to the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. There are ways to get around that day, so please see this map to plan your day: ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE

Although the Ironman lasts for only one day, there are many people here right now training for the event. This means lots of extra traffic, bicyclists, and pedestrians on the roadway. Please use extra caution when driving, cycling, and walking/running. Please stay on the shoulder unless you are a car or motorcycle and ride/run single file. It's the Aloha that makes this state great, so let's keep it that way!

Motorcycle Route: Mauna Kea

For amazing views try out this

Mauna Kea Route

- From Big Island Motorcycle Co. make a left at the light onto Highway 19.

- At the next traffic signal turn right onto Waikoloa Road.

- Take this road until you reach the T (about 12 miles) and take a left onto Mamalohoa Hwy

- After about 5 miles you will need to take a right onto Hwy 200 aka Saddle Road.

- Continue on Saddle Road for about 25 miles and make a left on the Mauna Kea Access Road. Stop at the visitor center on your right.

- There is a bathroom for public use between the Saddle Road Junction and the Mauna Kea Access Road, look for the "campground" with the little cabins. Otherwise there are no facilities until you reach the visitor center on Mauna Kea where you can buy snacks and drinks and use the restroom. There is absolutely NO gas station on Saddle Road so be sure to fill up before heading out.

- You may not ride the motorcycle past the visitor center on Mauna Kea due to dangerous road conditions requiring a 4WD vehicle however from the visitor center there are amazing views within a short 10 minute hike as well as a place to view the endangered silversword plant.

- The visitor center itself is very interesting as they have loads of information about the Mauna Kea observatories and related information.

- Jackets and riding gear are included with your motorcycle rental so if you choose to take this route we highly recommend wearing some gear as it gets real cold at the high elevations.

- One of the best parts about this route is heading back toward the ocean from the mountain. You can feel the air gradually heat up and the views are, of course, amazing!

Double Valley Ride

Minimum 4 hours

Waipio Valley Overlook

- From Big Island Motorcycle Co. in Waikoloa, head north on Hwy 19 by taking a left at the traffic signal.
- After about 10 miles you will reach a T intersection, take a left onto Hwy 270 toward Hawi.
- You will want to explore the towns of Hawi and Kapa'au, about another 30 miles. Very cute restaurants, galleries, and shops. The King Kamehameha statue is in Kapa'au.
- Keep going on 270 until the road ends, this is Pololu Valley.

- You can hike down into Pololu Valley if you wish and check out the very beautiful black sand beach (not good for swimming though). This takes about an hour round trip if you don't hang at the beach for very long. The trail is steep but quick and manageable for most ability levels.
- From here you will want to find Hwy 250 toward Waimea. You will have to back track a few miles and look for the signs on your left. If you miss the first turn-off, there is another one in the town of Hawi.
- Hwy 250 is our favorite ride on the island. Twisty roads, sparse traffic, and stunning scenery make it a must-ride. This highway runs along the spine of the Kohala mountains so it's cool and shady and you will be able to see the landscape all the way down to the ocean. Gorgeous.

- At the T intersection make a left. Then make another left at the traffic light onto Hwy 19 toward Honokaa. You will be in the town of Waimea. There are many places to stop and have a bite here as well as good shopping and even a visit to the historic Parker Ranch.
- Continue on Hwy 19 toward Honokaa for about 13 miles and make a left onto Plumeria St (look for the signs that say Honokaa and Waipio Valley).
- Make another left at the stop sign onto Waipio Road. Take this road about 7 miles, following the signs to Waipio Valley.

- You can enjoy the views of Waipio Valley from the overlook but you will not be able to ride into the valley on your motorcycle. The grade is very steep and the park rangers will stop you anyway. If you wish to go into the valley, you can walk down (a mile down, very tough, especially on the way back up) or catch a ride from someone in a 4WD.
- You will want to check out Honokaa town (the town you passed through when you made a L at the stop sign to get to Waipio). They have some fun shops and Tex's Drive In makes the best malasadas (Portugese Donuts).
- To get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co. get back to Hwy 19 and head toward Waimea. You will have to make a right onto Lindsey St. to stay on Hwy 19 then after 10 miles you will need to make a left to stay on Hwy 19 (toward Kona). Turn right onto Waikoloa Beach Drive after another 10 miles and find us in the Kings' Shops.

Mauna Lani Adventure II

Plus Puako

Minimum 3 hours

- Walk the bikes over the King's Trail until you reach the gate and the bridge, where you will be able to cross over on to the pavement. This took us about 15 minutes. Take a right out onto the road, then the next right (at the stop sign) and continue until you reach a large round-about.

- At the round-about take the road that leads to the Fairmont Orchid (north) or stop at the shops on the west end of the round-about to fuel up on picnic provisions at the grocery store there (they have an awesome deli by the way). You can also stop for sit down fare at the Tommy Bahama Cafe(we like!), Monstera Restaurant, or Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, all located in the shops.

- Continue on toward the Fairmont Orchid making a right just before the hotel, look for the sign marked Holoholokai Beach Park (see the pic below).

- Once at the beach park you have a couple of options; hang out at the beach, check out the petroglyphs, or head toward Puako. We highly recommend you check out the Malama Petroglyph Trail. Please lock your bikes up in the parking lot if you decide to view the petroglyphs as the trail is full of kiawe thorns that will most definitely lead to a flat tire. It is about a 10 minute walk to the petroglyph viewing area and well worth it. The trail is well marked, see the pic below.

- Petroglyphs are ancient Hawaiian rock carvings. Archaeologists are still unsure of their exact meanings and why the Hawaiians carved the markings into the stone. The trail has some good signs explaining petroglyphs in more detail.

- Once you reach the beach parking lot again, grab your bikes and head toward the ocean where you will find a sandy shoreline trail and make a right, heading north. Up to you if you want to ride the bikes over this portion. I walked my bike and made it back to pavement in about 5 minutes so it is a short part of the ride.

- This trail takes you into the town of Puako, a small seaside community with one small general store if you need to get some snacks.

- We like to explore the many "Shoreline Access" points along this one-road town. This area is great for snorkeling, although it can be tricky to get in and out of the water here (no sand) so we suggest only experienced folks attempt it. It is also a wonderful place to catch the sunset.

- Once you pass the church (on your left) you've reached the end of town so you can turn around and come back the way you came, or continue on to Beach 69 or Hapuna Beach.

The Best Sunset Viewing Spots

Below is a list of a few of the best spots to catch the sunset here on the Big Island whether you are on iron horseback, cruising on a moped, or pushing pedals. If you are lucky, you might even spot the Green Flash!
If you are on a Motorcycle:

1. Mauna Kea visitor center
    To get here from Big Island Motorcycle Co. make a left at the light onto Hwy 19. Make a right at the next light onto Waikoloa Road. Take this road all the way until you reach the T and make a left onto Hawaii Belt Road. After about 11 miles make a right onto Saddle Road. Continue east about 17 miles on Saddle Road making a left onto Mauna Kea Access Road (look for the signs to the visitor center). Do not ride past the visitor center as the road becomes unpaved and unsuitable for motorcycle travel past this point.
     Once you are at the visitor center you will see a trail across the road (ask if you can't find it) which will take you to an amazing sunset viewing area. You will be able to see all the way down the mountain and beyond. Go on a clear day or you won't see much. More info on Mauna Kea: Mauna Kea Visitor Center
     Be prepared for cold temperatures at this elevation. Also be prepared for some challenging riding on the way back as there are no street lights and it gets very dark out there. There are also some tricky one lane portions to navigate. At the time of writing, we do not recommend taking Saddle Road all the way into Hilo as there are still some unpaved/unimproved portions.

2. Mile Marker 81 Scenic Lookout
     From Big Island Motorcycle Co. make a right at the light onto Hwy 19. Look for the "Scenic Point" signs and the pullout on your right near mile marker 81.

If you are on a Moped:

1. Mile Marker 81 Scenic Lookout

     From Big Island Motorcycle Co. make a right at the light onto Hwy 19. Look for the "Scenic Point" signs and the pullout on your right near mile marker 81. Be sure to yield to traffic around you especially as you make a left back onto the highway from the scenic point.

2. Puako Shoreline Access
     Find your own private sunset spot in the town of Puako. To get there make a left onto Hwy 19 from Big Island Motorcycle Co. After about 6 miles make a left toward Puako onto Puako Beach Drive. This will take you into the quaint town where, on your right, you will see several "Shoreline Access" points. You will likely be able to find a great spot all to yourself. You will want to head back before it gets too dark and, as always, yield to all traffic around you.

If you are riding a Bicycle:

1. Buddha's Point inside the Hilton hotel.
     From Big Island Motorcycle Co. make a right out of the parking lot toward the Hilton hotel. After passing the main entrance and side entrance on your left, you will see a service entrance. Take this road toward a grassy knoll with a large Buddha statue and enjoy a lovely sunset view. Not a Hilton hotel guest? Not a problem, the Hilton people are nice and share their property with everyone.

2. Meditation Point inside the Mauna Lani Resort
     To get to the Mauna Lani take Highway 19 north 2 miles and turn left into the resort. You may also take the Kings' Trail to get to the Mauna Lani described here: Mauna Lani Adventure. Once inside the Mauna Lani resort you will want to find the beach access area on the south end of the resort. It has a cafe, a small white sand beach, and a boat moored near shore. There are signs that say "beach access" or "beach" to guide you.
     Once you find the beach look for a paved trail on the south end of the beach that follows the shoreline. This is Meditation Point which offers breathtaking shoreline views.

Snorkeling Tips

Some tips to get you in the water safely while protecting our beautiful Hawaiian waters.

Do not touch or stand on the coral. Even a small brush with your fins can kill the coral. Keep Hawaii beautiful and admire the underwater world with your eyes only.

Do not touch the animals. Touching fish and other animals can harm them and sometimes you.

Wear sunscreen on your back and backs of your legs

Do not walk in shallow water near the reef; sea urchin spines can cause nasty puncture wounds to the bottom of your feet.

Make sure your mask fits. The seal around the mask should fit your face like a suction cup while not breathing through your nose.

While snorkeling, breathe through your mouth only, making an “O” with your lips. Breathing out through your nose will break the seal in your mask. Make sure hair does not get under the seal of the mask.

Be aware of your surroundings. Watch the wave sets before entering the water and have an entry and exit plan, especially in rocky areas.

Practice in a sandy area or pool first to get comfortable with the equipment and make any adjustments.

Relax and slow your movements. You will see more the less you move around.

To get water out of your snorkel forcefully blow air out through your mouth, this will shoot the air out through the top of your snorkel.

Bicycle Route

Puako Beach Cruise

- Starting from Big Island Motorcycle Co. strap a couple bikes to your car (straps can be rented, too) or ride about 6 miles south on Highway 19 to Puako. You will see the signs as you drive/ride south, it will be a left turn from the highway onto Puako Beach Drive.

- From there make your first right onto Old Puako Road, then left into the beach parking lot, which looks like this:

- This beach is called "69's" and is great for swimming and snorkeling. There are full facilities here including bathrooms, showers, and picnic tables. Not to mention there is plenty of shade and room to spread out.
- We recommend taking the bikes with you out to the beach or locking them securely in the parking lot.

- After you've had your fill of sun and sand, head back out the way you came, but this time ride toward the town of Puako, which will be a right turn at the Puako Beach Dr. and Old Puako Rd. intersection.
- This easy-going ride through town is full of charm. Check out an old church:

- Or grab a snack at the little store:

- There are many worthwhile beach access points along the way (anywhere you see a "Shoreline access" sign) with great tidepools and snorkeling. Brackish ponds dot the area as well many beautiful homes.
- To get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co., take Puako Beach Dr. up to the highway, take a right (heading south), then another right onto Waikoloa Beach Drive.

Volcano Run plus Circle Island Motorcycle Route

Minimum 7 hours

     - Starting from Big Island Motorcycle Co. in the Waikoloa Beach Resort, head south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway. This road will take you all the way to Volcanoes National Park, 128 miles.
     - We recommend starting out by 8am. Since we don't open til 9:30am please call to arrange an early pick up if you'd like to do this route.
     - On the way to the volcano, stop at Hana Hou restaurant in Naalehu for coffee and good grinds, don't miss the dessert case, yum. This little place has a great old Hawaii ambiance and is a fun spot to take a break. There is a gas station nearby, you will want to fill up here.

- Continue on south to Volcanoes National Park, there is a small entry fee per vehicle. Once inside, stop at the visitor's center for information and maps. Be aware that you will not see any flowing lava inside the national park, but you are likely to see some pretty amazing steam vents (this is where all the vog comes from).

     - We recommend following Crater Rim Drive which circles the Kilauea Caldera. Also please be aware that portions of Crater Rim Drive have been closed recently due to volcanic activity. There are many places to stop and explore along the drive. We like the Steam Vents, the Jaggar Museum, and the Thurston Lava Tube.
     - Continue on down Chain of Craters Road which will take you all the way to the ocean. This road is very scenic and many times you can see the steam rising from the ocean where lava is flowing in. Please be aware that this road can get very windy. If you are uncomfortable riding in high winds, skipping this portion of the park might be in your best interest.
    - You could easily spend a whole day exploring the park, so we recommend selecting a few highlights you want to see and limit your visit to about 2 or 3 hours so that you will have plenty of time to ride back.
    - Once you are done exploring the park, head back out to the highway continuing in the same direction, toward Hilo. There are facilities (bathrooms, food) inside the park or you can stop in Volcano Village where there are restaurants and gas stations.
     - Continue on past Hilo, past Honokaa, and into Waimea. Once in Waimea, you will want to get on Kawaihae Road, marked as Lindsey Road, which is a right turn at the stoplight near the big shopping center (on your left).
     - Continue west for about 10 miles then turn left onto Highway 19. After about 9 miles, turn right on Waikoloa Beach Drive and make your way back to Big Island Motorcycle Co.
     - We don't recommend making plans for any major stops in Hilo or along the way back as you will likely be pretty tired at this point and it's a long ride back. Just enjoy the ride. You will want to make sure you get back with some daylight left as the roads here get very dark at night and besides, you wouldn't want to miss any scenery, especially between Hilo and Honokaa. Get gas in Hilo, Honokaa, or Waimea, depending on where you filled up previously. There is also a gas station adjacent to Big Island Motorcycle Co.

Snorkel and Scoot

(minimum 2 hours)

- Gear up with snorkel gear and mopeds at Big Island Motorcycle Co. in the Kings' Shops in Waikoloa. Yes, we will give you a "bundle" deal for the rentals, just mention this route posting!

- From the shop make a left out onto Highway 19 heading north.

- Mopeds have a speed threshold of 30 mph so you must ride on the shoulder! Be sure to yield to all traffic, assuming that they do not see you. Also, please obey all traffic laws including traffic lights and stop signs.

- Proceed about 4.5 miles north on Hwy 19, turning left onto Puako Beach Dr., look for the signs that say Puako. This left turn will take you out into a turn lane (not a traffic signal) so please yield to all traffic in both directions.

- Make a right onto Kohola Way (not marked but is the first right) after about .5 miles then left into the beach parking lot (this will be obvious). The short road to the parking lot is not paved. We do not allow you to ride the mopeds off-road so please walk the mopeds to the parking lot and lock them to something, or to each other. Those little tires can't handle gravel, so you might get a flat or end up flat on your back if you decide to ride them off-road.

- This beach is called "69's" or Waialea Bay and is great for snorkeling and swimming. A sandy bottom, lots of shade and space to spread out makes this spot one of our favorites. There are fresh water showers and bathrooms at this beach as well as a few picnic tables. Provisions can be purchased at a small grocery store in Puako proper, about a mile south of the beach. When snorkeling you will want to enter on the south end of the beach area where there is more coral and less cloudiness due to waves.

- When snorkeling be sure to follow the "look but don't touch rule," to avoid damage to coral and other wildlife. Be mindful of your fins and never stand on the coral as simply touching the coral can kill it.

- This could easily be an all day adventure, so relax and enjoy some of the best snorkeling on the island. Fun is easy!

- To get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co., simply come back the way you came.

Learn the skills you need to know to get on the road safely and legally. The course includes classroom time for review of rules of the road, riding strategies, and safety tips and riding time to prepare you for the DMV riding test and, of course, the open road.

Mauna Lani Adventure I

- From Big Island Motorcycle Co. find the King's Trail on the far north end of resort, just east of the Waikoloa Colony Villas. Warning: this trail is extremely bumpy and difficult to navigate, you must walk the bikes over the trail portion of this route and be able to occasionally lift the bike over large rocks. You must be up for adventure if you decide to follow this route!
- Walk the bikes over the King's Trail until you reach the gate and the bridge, pictured above, where you will be able to cross over on to the pavement. This took us about 15 minutes. Take your next right, then the following right and continue until you reach a large roundabout.

- Go around until you see the "Shops at Mauna Lani" sign. This is a good place to stop and get drinks, snacks, or lunch. There are several good restaurants, including the Tommy Bahama Cafe, and a great gourmet deli inside the grocery store. We really liked this shop called Oasis, lots of fun housewares, clothes, and jewelry. You can lock the bikes up at the rack near the grocery store.

- Heading west out of the shopping center (away from the roundabout) take a left onto the road toward the spa. On your right side you will see a parking lot, public bathrooms, and paved trail with signs that say
"Caves and Petroglyphs." You can ride the bikes on this trail but please yield to pedestrians. We found this cool cave, but didn't see any petroglyphs, maybe we didn't look hard enough. In any case, there is another very cool petroglyph trail on the other side of the resort which I will cover in the next route.

- This paved trail will lead all the way down to the beach where you will enjoy riding around the picturesque brackish ponds with little palm tree islands. Feel free to explore the beaches, all beaches in Hawaii are open to the public.

      - After enjoying a little rays, head to the beach on the south side of the resort, where the boat is moored and there is a little cafe and dive gear rental. There is a narrow paved trail on the south end of this beach that follows the coast line. Take this trail, but be sure to yield to pedestrians.
      - This portion of the trail offers panoramic ocean views, we can see why they named it "Meditation Point."
      - This trail quickly turns into a bumpy lava rock section (walk the bikes over this part), then eventually takes you onto a golf course where you will need to follow the golf cart track until you can get back onto the road, to your left, which is actually a small subdivision. Once in the subdivision, head toward the right until you reach the gate (opens automatically to let you out). Take a right onto the main road.
      - To get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co., take a right on Na La Hele Rd (you will recognize it as the way you came in). The just go back the way you came, over the bridge...
      - The Map below shows driving directions to the Shops at Mauna Lani from Big Island Motorcycle Co. You can go this way if you are not up for braving the King's Trail (it's really pretty tough).

Kohala Mountain Road (2.5 hours round trip with no stops)

      - From our shop, get on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Hwy 19) traveling north.
      - At the T-intersection, make a right toward Waimea (east). You will be on Kawaihae Rd.
      - After about 5 miles, make a left onto Kohala Mountain Rd.
      - Take this road all the way into the town of Hawi. This is a great spot for shopping, eating, and walking around. Very quaint little town.
      - Once you've had your fill, make your way north on Akoni Pule Hwy (the main road through town) to the end of the road where you will see the beautiful Pololu Valley. The steep hike down into the valley and black sand beach below takes about 20 minutes. The difficult hike is well worth it! Be advised that swimming is not recommended at this beach due to surf and ocean current conditions.
      - To get back to Big Island Motorcycle Co., you can come back the way you came, or simply hop back on Akoni Pule Hwy going south, make a right onto Hwy 19, then right on Waikoloa Beach Drive.
- This route could easily take all day depending on how much and for how long you stop. Great scenery, fun stops, by far our favorite ride on this island!

So by now everyone should know about the devastating earthquake in Chile and the tsunami threat to Hawaii and other countries and islands facing the Pacific.
I just wanna tip my hat to everyone involved in this ordeal - from the scientists at the USGS and NOAA who identified the threat, to the cops and volunteers helping to evacuate the lower elevations.
Although the tsunami was a flop (thank god) everyone acted as they were supposed to and everything was well organized and well executed. Much mahalos!
We wish the best for those less fortunate - our thoughts and prayers are with you.

One month in business as Big Island Motorcycle Co., hopefully many more to come! We've had a busy Christmas season here in Waikoloa which is so refreshing. Here's to your next vaction in Hawaii!

There was a big swell that came in this week, they even had to close all the beach parks up and down the west coast (of the Big Island), but it's been fun to watch the big waves come in. We are well into whale season now too. Winter is definately our favorite time of year in Hawaii.

We were having a debate as to what motorcycle would be the best to take on a long term tour of the mainland U.S., should we ever get the chance. What do you all think? Email us, we'll post the most popular/unique answers.

Big Island Motorcycle Co. (formerly Thrillseekers Hawaii rentals and tours) has opened its first rental location on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our Grand Opening was on December 9 at the Kings' Shops in the Waikoloa Beach Resort.

Motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles, and snorkel gear are currently for rent. We also have a selection of t-shirts, skull caps, and other fun motorcycle accessories.

Opening the shop has been quite an adventure and has made it a very special Christmas for us. Come on down and see us when you can!

My Thoughts on Harley-Davidson Riders

Over the years I've met and ridden with people from all walks of life - from Dr.'s to students and am fascinated by the diversity of bikes and different types of bikers. But the one type of biker I don't understand are the Harley extremists. I just don't understand the phrase "If it's not a Harley, it's not a motorcycle."

Don't get me wrong - I love a nice Harley, and I admit, I've always felt cool cruising around on one (rentals - I've never owned one). But to say that it's not a motorcycle if it doesn't have the H-D logo on it???

From the trials and tribulations of others, including multiple bike mechanics, I don't think I have the desire to own one, or even offer them as a rental for others. There are so many other cool bikes out there (that are way cheaper too!) that I just don't know if it's patriotism talking or ignorance when they say things like that.

So my come-back to that phrase is now "If it's not a Harley, it's not in the shop!"

Renting from us will be a worry-free experience as we will deliver and pick up the bikes right to your door. The rentals can be combined with any tour package or you can choose to set out on your own.

On the road again

My husband is an avid motorcyclist and this blog came about because together we own a motorcycle tour company on the Big Island of Hawaii. We want our customers to be able to get to get to know us and give us feedback on what they want in a tour. And as always we are more than willing to share vacation tips and advice.

Like I said my husband is an avid motorcyclist. The truth is it had been nearly four years since my last ride on a motorcycle when I went for a spin on the Yamaha he recently got for me. "You need to get back on the road," he said. And he was right in so many ways. Heart pounding and knees shaking I climbed on for that first ride. Even though it was only around the block I was reminded that there is nothing else in the world like motorcycling. The rush, the confidence, the speed, the joy. Boy had I been missing out.

So I was a little rusty, and I got chased by a killer dog, and I killed the engine a few times. It's ok because I know that with a few more days of practice I'll be out on the open road and loving it.
